Pro Tip - Is this email real?

How to tell if the email is real or not

Spam and phishing are not just ways to keep yourself fed.  By now you have heard of these terms, if not you will.

One thing we spend a lot of time doing at EAC, is keeping abreast of all the new ways people try to trick users into clicking on a link in order to part them with their data or money.  While a lot of antivirus software comes with anti-spam software, it's important to note that these are not 100% fool proof technologies.  For every advancement in protecting you, there are armies of people bent on circumventing those protections in an eternal game of cat and mouse.

You are the last line of defense in this battle.  Here are some tips you can use to help keep yourself safe:

  1.  This one is easy to recognise...Bad grammar in the email.  Rarely, do professional companies release emails with bad spelling or grammar.
  2. Hover over the senders email or right click on it to reveal the actual email address.  For example an email from Microsoft will have microsoft.com  as the domain it's sending from.
  3. Hover over any of the links in the email.  Most of them will tell you to click here to change your email password or to make a payment.  Hovering over a link will reveal the correct link it's going to.  Try it here
  4. If an email is asking for money unexpectedly, call the company and verify first.
  5. Don't open attachments from any email that is unsolicited.  If you don't expect it, don't open it.
  6. Last but not least...Keep your antivirus software up to date
